Online Classes

  • Outschool. Small group online classes for all ages. Students meet with a live teacher, typically once a week for 1-8 weeks. Anyone can register to teach a class, so it is best to find a teacher through word of mouth.

  • Time4Writing. This is a fantastic resource for teaching writing for grades 2-12.  Kids go at their own pace and schedule. There is a combination of videos, multiple-choice quizzes, and freestyle writing assignments. Each assignment has clear expectations and is evaluated by a certified teacher. Each 8 week course teaches grammar and composition.  Assignments are cumulative and teach students organize their thoughts into an outline and then an essay. Sometimes, the teacher will ask the child to revise the composition if there are significant issues.  Elementary school students should plan on one 8 week course while middle school and high school should take two courses.  Cost is $120 per course.

  • Night Zookeeper. Game based creative writing system. Children design a character that will go on an adventure.  Grammar and vocabulary are introduced in a fun way, and children are prompted to write free-style text.  They get feedback right away from the system - either the computer, or a human that reads the text.  Parents also get to see and review assignments. Children can also share their stories with other kids who use Night Zookeeper.

  • Grub Street. Grub Street Books has an amazing young writers program open to students grade 8-12. They offer 1x/month FREE classes across a variety of different writing genres and classes are signed up for on a first come/first serve basis and run on Saturday afternoons. Live classes in Boston as well as online courses.

  • Power School. K-12. Each lesson consists of high-quality videos (the best in-class in my opinion) and multiple choice questions, that are adaptively selected based on your child’s responses. There are optional hands-on assignments that parents/children need to coordinate.   Cost is based on how many classes your child takes: $10/month $25/month per child depending on how many classes your child takes.

  • Time4Learning. K-12. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions. This is the highest rated full-service website by Cathy Duff. It is the only full-service website that has kids reading full-length books (kids read excerpts on the website to complete assignments, but parents are given the list of books in case they want to buy them). Parents need to grade free-style essays themselves. Costs $20/month for K-8 and $30/month for 9-12.  There are two sister websites time4writing.com teaches writing skills and has a certified teacher give feedback on your child’s work.

  • Study.com. 3-12 + college. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions. There are suggestions for hands-on science assignments. Students get 24/7 access to instructors to ask for help with assignments. Costs $60/month.

  • IXL. K-12. Each class consists of videos and multiple choice questions that are adaptively chosen based on prior response. Cost is $10-$20 per month per child depending on how many classes your child takes.

  • Tikvah Fund. Seminars for 7-12 that combine classical western literature with traditional rabbinic teachings.
